♦ Chim. Sel de l'acide chloreux. — Minér. Au plur. Famille de silicates naturels de fer et de magnésium, comprenant notamment la biotite.

MINÉR. Alumino-silicate de fer ou de magnésium, généralement de couleur verdâtre, et voisin du mica par sa structure et ses propriétés physico-chimiques. Les chlorites produites par la décomposition du mica noir (A. DE LAPPARENT, Cours de minér., 1899, p. 497).
Rem. Est donné au masc. par les Lar.
Étymol. et Hist. 1578 « pierre précieuse de couleur verte » (LEFÈVRE DE LA BODERIE, Harmon., p. 741 ds GDF. Compl.), attest. isolée; 1797 minér. (Journal des Mines, n° XXVII, Nivôse an V, p. 284). Empr. au lat. chloritis (gr. qui, d'apr. Pline (Hist. Nat., 37, 156 ds TLL s.v.), désignait une pierre de couleur verte.
